New Name – Fresh Vision

Peanut butter and jelly. Starsky and Hutch. Some things just seem right together. That was the thinking when Lakewood Credit Union and Kenora District Credit Union, two credit unions in Kenora, Ontario, Canada joined forces with a united mission to serve their members better than anyone else and help strengthen the communities they serve.

The merger created challenges however, including what name to call the new institution to set it apart. Both management and board teams agreed they wanted something that wouldn’t limit them geographically, would appeal to a younger generation and would make people stop and go “Wow! That’s different.” In other words, a brand name that would get noticed and draw new members to the door.

Out of the Weber renaming process came just such a name - Copperfin Credit Union. The name Copperfin was chosen for its link to the vibrant colors and natural scenic landscape of Northwest Ontario. Truly evoking all that is outdoorsy and recreational, it helped send a message that the credit union cares about all who live, work and enjoy their surroundings.

The new name received a 90% combined membership approval. Now poised for the future with a strong new name and brand, you’ll hear many in Kenora saying. ”Copperfin Credit Union. Wow, they are different!”
